    What you need to know
A decent machine (for one person), but with some shortcomings.- As recommended by other reviewers (thanks for saving me time and frustration), I have used size 100 filters, which can be picked up pretty cheap. They do seem to make a stronger coffee, keep things cleaner, and go straight in the compost bin. And no grinds get through.- There’s no timer, but my feeling is that’s no great loss. My life isn’t planned that accurately anyway, and I can just about survive the three minutes waiting for it to serve me.- I’m pretty sure the cup isn’t insulated, and the base isn’t heated, so it does cool rather quickly (but still better than a cold ceramic mug). I originally planned to turn it on before going off for my morning ablutions. But in truth I’d rather a bit more heat in my first sip and it’s only three minutes. So pre-load the night before, and press the button when I’m ready. Pre-loaded, it’s still quicker than the kettle.- The mug can just hold 350ml (yep, I measured it). A regular ceramic mug is normally about 250ml. I do 300ml water, leaving space for 50ml milk, which gives a medium-colour drink – not too dark, not too latte. I suggest you find some receptacle like a glass or cup which will give you the right final amount in your morning coffee. The benefits are:- A decent, fresh coffee first thing in the morning (better than have managed with in-the-cup solutions)- Can be set up the night before, so morning head just needs to press one button- Easy to keep clean (if you use paper filters)but it’s really only for singles. Two or more would do better to get a larger Cona-style machine, especially one with a decent “keep warm” plate. But it’s earned it’s place on my kitchen counter, and there’s a host of coffee devices that have failed to achieve that.

    Cheap and it just works.
I wasn’t expecting much from this little coffee machine, after all, I only paid around £17-£18.Basically it does what it says on the tin, so to speak, it makes coffee.I originally bought this machine along with some size 100 filters by Melitta, as commented on by another reviewer. The machine arrived a few days before the filter, so I tried coffee before they arrived, it was fine, but I definitely noticed an improvement when using the filters. You do have to kind of squash the filters into the plastic basket provided with the machine and I do recommend keeping the lid open while it starts up, as I notice sometimes the sides of the filters collapse inwards the hot water bypasses the coffee. There are some annoyances with this device, but are easilly remedied however. The max fill line in the tank is basically a hole, so if you overfill it, the water pours out of the back of the machine and onto your work surface.Bit of an odd choice, but if you simply use the provided travel mug (not insulated by the way), you don’t have to worry about it.The second minor annoyance is that there’s also no non-drip function, so once the machine has finished and you’ve removed your cup/mug, you need to place a container (I use a regular sized mug) underneath to catch the drips.Overall though, if you want a no frills (at all) coffee percolator, I would recommend it.

Makes good coffee with a few tweaks
This machine is so convenient!! I had a Gaggia which died a death after 20 years of faithful service. Sad to see it goThe major gripe with this is when it’s brewing it collects an awful lot of condensation which converts to water in the lid. When you open it up there’s no catchment to divert the water into the reservoir, it all goes down the back. I have wooden worktops so it’s not good to have water pooling there. The water also drops straight through the coffee as the basket is pretty ineffective at holding it there for any length of time.I’ve overcome these problems with leaving the lid open when brewing/cooling & I use the Temper to compact down the coffee so the water sits in there a little while longer. This makes the brewing time a little longer but the coffee is of better quality.Having said that, I was looking at around £1000 for a comparable machine to replace my Gaggia (they don’t make them like that model anymore, they’re all cheap plastic now), This was £15 & to be fair once the tweaks have been made it actually makes a decent coffee in a fraction of the time!!
